Our main responsibility is to keep rail services as efficient as possible The rail network ONTRACK inherited in 2004 was severely run down, following more than a decade of underinvestment in maintenance.

Since then, we’ve achieved significant improvements - but large sections of the network will need careful management in coming years.

ONTRACK has taken major steps towards improving the efficiency of the rail network.  In the last two years we have replaced or improved over 750 metres of bridge, laid almost 70kms of new track and 170,000 sleepers.
Network maintenanceOur ongoing maintenance programme includes repairs to track, bridges, signals and the communications network. Maintenance work is carried out by ONTRACK’s subsidiary ONTRACK Infrastructure Ltd. This is co-ordinated through our Northern, Central and Southern regional offices.
Network renewalOur renewal programme replaces equipment, such as rails and sleepers, that has reached the end of its life.
Temporary speed restrictionsWe have reduced the number of temporary speed restrictions, which require trains to slow down while passing over some parts of the network.
UpgradesUnder our upgrade system we buy news assets or replace an existing asset with something better. A number of upgrade projects are currently underway.
