About Us - ONTRACK
ONTRACK is part of KiwiRail Group (New Zealand Railways Corporation). We have about 900 staff around the country with our corporate operations based at our head office at the Wellington Railway Station. Steam railway, the wonder of the industrial age, played a big part in the growth of colonial New Zealand. It opened up new districts to settlement and promoted economic development. Read about the establishment and development of New Zealand's rail system.
New Zealand has around 60 heritage rail operators that run steam or older diesel engines, or display historic trains and carriages.
They are often non-profit or charitable organisations. ONTRACK produces newsletters, reporting and planning documents which present an overview of our activities. We are guided by two high level government strategies, the New Zealand Transport Strategy and the National Rail Strategy to 2015. ONTRACK has policies that govern public access and safety on the rail corridor. We also have polices that guide our approach towards railway land leaseholders and neighbours of railway land. The rail corridor is an unforgiving workplace. We have developed occupational health and safety policies and taken a range of steps to ensure the safety of our staff and contractors. ONTRACK operates New Zealand’s railway network. We manage the movement of trains along our network and maintain and upgrade the tracks. |
