Engineering

ONTRACK’s engineers provide technical expertise on the design, maintenance and development of a variety of rail infrastructure. This covers bridges, culverts, tunnels, the rail itself, signalling and telecommunications, overhead electrical systems (traction) plus the engineering aspects of wagons, plant and wheel-rail interaction.

Engineers, whether they are working within our central engineering team or with one of the projects, have a significant role to play in many of the major upgrades that are underway across the network.

In addition to the upgrades, they have an important job to do in improving the basic network infrastructure.  Since 2004 ONTRACK has significantly increased the amount of new rail laid from 11 km a year to 40 km in 2008; we have more than doubled the number of new sleepers laid; doubled the number of level crossings upgraded; and we have grown bridge replacements from 197 metres to 560 metres.

The engineering team work in specialised fields of traction, track, structures, mechanical, signalling and communications, and codes and standards. They provide advice on projects and manage outsourced contracts. They also carry out site surveys, inspections and audits.

There are a variety of roles throughout engieering including Project Engineers and Engineers within a specific field. To be successful within the engineering team you will need

  • A qualification in civil or electrical engineering
  • Previous experience of working of woring in an infrastructure environment such as rail, construction or roading would be an advantage
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Design experience
  • Excellent problem solving skills
