Signals & Communications

Working mainly outdoors, signals workers are responsible for maintaining, servicing and installing signalling equipment, barriers and crossing alarms. If you’re looking for a challenging role in a supportive team environment, this could be the role for you.

There are two main types of signals workers - Signals Maintainers and Signals Technicians.
Trainee Signals Maintainer or TechnicianA Trainee Signal Technician must be a registered New Zealand electrician, or capable of becoming one. Trainee Signals Maintainers are not registered electricians but must have some knowledge of and experience with electrical systems.

Both maintainers and technicians receive extensive training during their careers. We support some of our Trainee Maintainers in working towards a National Certificate in Electrical Engineering. Our Trainee Technicians receive excellent on the job training.

Trainee signals workers go through a three year training programme to qualify as either a Maintainer or Technician. They are mentored by existing staff and attend training courses both in-house and externally.

To succeed as a signals worker you will need:

  • a current New Zealand Electrician registration (Trainee Technicians), preferably with a current practicing licence
  • experience in electrical systems maintenance (Trainee Maintainer)
  • a full class 1 driver license
  • the ability to work as part of a team.

Signals Maintainer or TechnicianWhen you have passed the skills modules you can progress to being a qualified maintainer or technician. Signal Maintainers and Technicians continue to extend their skills and technical knowledge through a combination of on the job training and courses.
Leading Signal Maintainer or TechnicianLeading Signal Maintainers or Technicians lead our signals teams and have extensive signals knowledge.  Leading Maintainers or Technicians actively participate in work as they supervise the team, mentor junior staff, and plan work that needs to be completed.
