 Over Dimension Loads

Oversized – or over dimensional - loads are larger than normal road loads. Oversized loads can cross the railway line, but a permit is required.
The aim of our oversized loads policyThe policy aims to ensure that we are notified before an oversized load travels over a railway crossing.
Background to the policyRailway crossings are designed so that normal sized vehicles have clear views or warnings of approaching trains. Oversize or overweight vehicles need extra safety measures, which are managed through a permit system.

Oversized loads may take longer to travel across a level crossing and require protection for the period of the crossing. For some loads it may be necessary to move railway equipment, like bells or overhead wires. Supervision by ONTRACK staff may also be required.

Our tolerance chart shows the maximum sized loads allowed to cross at different points along the network.   Download the tolerance chart (PDF)

Using a permit

A permit may cover a single load or a number of loads over a specified period of time.

If you get a permit to take an oversized load across a level crossing, you must contact National Train Control before making the crossing. The Train Controller will confirm that suitable protection has been put in place.

In some cases, supervision and protection is required by either our track staff or signals and traction overhead staff. This is specified on your crossing permit.

Once the crossing is complete you must inform Train Control that the load is clear of the crossing. Until train control gets a clearance, the load is deemed to be on the crossing.
