The rail corridor is not a public thoroughfare. Access to it is strictly regulated to ensure public safety and the safe operation of the railway. We recognise that utilities and other service providers will need to access the corridor from time to time.
Those needing to enter the rail corridor for legitimate purposes are required to gain permission through a formal process. ONTRACK administers 18,000 hectares of land throughout New Zealand. Our objective is to use this as far as possible for rail purposes. Where this is not possible, we lease land for a variety of uses. We have policies in place which manage the relationship with our leaseholders and neighbours. Public safety on the rail corridor is a critical issue for ONTRACK. We have policies and procedures in place to ensure as best we can that the public can cross the rail corridor safely. We also expect the public to cooperate with us in ensuring their safety. |
