ONTRACK provides track access to freight, passenger and heritage train operators. Each week we manage the movement of:

  • 900 freight trains operated by KiwiRail
  • 52 long distance passenger trains, including the Overlander, TranzAlpine and TranzCoastal, operated by TranzScenic
  • 2200 suburban passenger services in Wellington, operated by TranzMetro on behalf of the Greater Wellington Regional Council
  • About 1570 suburban passenger services in Auckland, operated by Veolia Transport  on behalf of  the Auckland Regional Transport Authority

A number of heritage operators also run regular short trips and occasional excursion services on the network.

Heritage operatorsNew Zealand has around 60 heritage rail operators that run steam or older diesel engines, or display historic trains and carriages. They are often non-profit or charitable organisations.

Some operators have privately owned tracks from 1km to over 5km. In some cases heritage groups are allowed to use the national rail network.

A comprehensive list of rail heritage lines, museums and excursions can be found on the Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand website.
