Upgrade works to Wellington’s rail network are continuing in preparation for a major shutdown during the Christmas holiday period.
KiwiRail’s new track maintenance fleet is part of a $25 million project to improve the efficiency and quality of New Zealand’s rail track maintenance. KiwiRail plans to remove a tunnel on the Midland Line near Stillwater next year to improve the line’s reliability and capacity. The refurbished Epuni Station on the Hutt Valley Line and the extended Khandallah Station platforms on the Johnsonville Line will re-open to passengers on Tuesday 22 September. A major railway signalling technology change was successfully completed in Wellington Signals staff will be on standby at Britomart Station this evening following a significant signalling failure which affected Auckland train services this morning. Delays are expected for road and rail commuters following temporary closure of the Remuera Road rail overbridge. A series of papers prepared in August 2008 on the the key issues facing the rail industry are now publicly available. More than 2000 people took the rare opportunity to walk a section of the Johnsonville Line before it re-opened to trains on 6 February. ONTRACK is giving locals the rare opportunity to explore a section of the Johnsonville railway line that is otherwise restricted to trains. A section from Crofton Downs will be open from 3-7pm on Wednesday 4 February. Commuter rail and freight services in Auckland will resume their regular timetable as of Monday 19th January, following a three week shut down of large sections of the rail network to allow major construction.
