Signal Boxes

Signal Box Controllers manage train traffic through busy stations, working closely with train control. They make quick decisions to set paths for trains, ensuring timetables are kept to.

Sometimes they formulate contingency plans and manage local access to the line by maintenance staff.

Signal box controllers work in a high pressure environment. Communication is an essential part of the role, with train control, adjacent signal box controllers and passenger coordination teams.

ONTRACK has signal boxes in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch.  Controllers often independently manage their part of the network. Auckland and Wellington controllers have the added pressure of daily commuter traffic in and around the cities, as more people opt to take the train.

The network operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so signal box controllers work on rostered shifts.
Signal Box Controller Level 1On starting the job, new signal box controllers learn about the role and gain skills during a probationary period. They learn through a combination of theory courses and on the job training.

To complete the probationary period and progress to the next level you must successfully complete all the training, which takes between six to nine weeks. You must also gain certification through either a written exam, practical assessment, or a combination of both.

New controllers must have:

  • the ability to communicate clearly
  • experience in making logistical decisions in a pressure environment
  • the ability to apply procedure
  • strong problem solving skills.
