Our traction teams look after the overhead wiring systems that electrified trains run on.
Traction teams are out in all weather fixing, maintaining and renewing the traction systems. To be a traction worker you need a good head for heights because you’re often working up ladders. It’s physically demanding work so you need to be fit, strong and happy to get your hands dirty.
We provide excellent training, including the chance to gain an NZQA qualification in Rail Transport Levels 2 and 3.
Trainee Traction Line MechanicTo become a qualified Traction Worker you train for three years. During this time you are mentored by existing staff members and attend external and in-house training courses.
To succeed as a Trainee Traction Worker you will need:
- a current full driver’s license
- a heavy trade motor vehicle license is desirable
- previous experience in labouring or manual work, preferably in electrical work
- the ability to understand basic technical information
- a strong commitment to health and safety.
Traction Line MechanicWhen you have successfully completed your training, you progress to Traction Line Mechanic. Traction Line Mechanics work on different grades, from three to one, with one being the most senior role. To achieve these different grades you must continue to develop your skills and attend a number of in-house training courses.
Traction Supervisor Traction Supervisors lead our traction teams. They have extensive traction knowledge having completed all the compulsory training and courses. Traction Supervisors actively participate in work as they supervise the team and mentor junior staff.
Other traction related roles include Traction Electrician, Leading Traction Electrician, Electrical Field Engineer – Traction, and Traction Control Room Operator.
